Interview with Oli.P: An Artist with Principles

Prokon-Journal: Oli, wie wichtig ist dir persönlich ein bewusster und nachhaltiger Lebensstil?

Oli.P: Nachhaltigkeit ist ein Thema, das meine Frau und mich schon unfassbar lange beschäftigt. Wir versuchen in unserem Alltag, so viel wie möglich nachhaltig auszurichten. Wir kaufen etwa seit einem Jahrzehnt keine Fast-Fashion mehr und achten darauf, wo die Kleidung produziert wird. Ein weiterer Punkt ist die Ernährung: Ich lebe seit sieben Jahren vegan, meine Frau vegetarisch. Unsere Lebensmittel kaufen wir auf dem Markt ein, die Reste landen bei uns auf dem Kompost, um davon Dünger für unsere Pflanzen herzustellen.

PJ: Nachhaltig produzierte Mode und regionale Produkte vom Markt – das ist nicht für jeden erschwinglich...

Oli.P: Natürlich hat jeder Mensch unterschiedliche Voraussetzungen. Deshalb ist es mir wichtig zu betonen: Jeder sollte im Rahmen seiner Möglichkeiten handeln. Die große Masse, aber auch die Industrie haben das Potenzial, wirklich etwas zu bewegen. Wenn jeder seinen Teil beiträgt, können wir gemeinsam viel erreichen.

PJ: Prominente stehen oft in der Kritik, wenn es um ihren Lebensstil geht – besonders im Zusammenhang mit dicken Autos oder häufigem Reisen. Wie handhabst du das?

Oli.P: Ich verstehe natürlich die Diskussion, besonders wenn es um unnötige Reisen geht. Ich habe sorgfältig abgewogen, welche Optionen ich habe, um meinen Job bestmöglich ausüben zu können. Ich spiele pro Woche drei bis fünf Konzerte. Fahre ich mit der Bahn, würde ich wahrscheinlich die Hälfte davon verpassen. (lacht) Um die Veranstaltungsorte mit meinem Equipment zuverlässig zu erreichen, bin ich einfach aufs Auto angewiesen. Es ist mein fahrendes Wohnzimmer, mein Arbeitsinstrument und der Ort, an dem ich die meiste Zeit verbringe. Dafür achten meine Frau und ich darauf, dass wir in anderen Bereichen, wie beim Stromverbrauch, nachhaltiger unterwegs sind.

PJ: What role do renewable sources like solar or wind energy play in this?

Oli.P: When we moved within Berlin, we thoroughly looked into various green energy providers. A friend then pointed me towards Prokon, and I immediately found it exciting that Prokon is a cooperative. Regardless of whether you invest 50 or 5,000 euros in shares – everyone has exactly one vote. From the very first contact, I’ve had the feeling that the people at Prokon truly believe in the energy transition and live it with full conviction. We now get our electricity from Prokon both privately and for business, and I’ve also purchased shares. I like the idea that by doing this, I’m supporting the expansion of wind energy.

Sustainability is more than a trend – it is a way of life.

PJ: You’ve experienced a lot in your long career. Has your attitude towards environmental issues and sustainability changed over the years?

Oli.P: Especially when it comes to thoughtlessly throwing things away or the contradiction of loving animals and then ordering a schnitzel in a restaurant – that underlying guilty conscience was already present for me in my twenties. And over time, it’s only grown stronger. At some point, my wife and I decided to completely change our lifestyle, especially our diet. Following the motto: all or nothing! Now, it feels much more consistent to me.

PJ: So you already live very consciously according to your values when it comes to consumption and your diet. Are there any other areas in which you would like to become more sustainable?

Oli.P: The last four years have been really difficult for us because my wife had to have a brain tumour removed. We didn't know for a long time how the whole thing would develop. Unfortunately, she won't recover completely, but we're just incredibly relieved that she can now take part in normal life again to some extent. She has even been studying ‘Sustainable Management’ since mid-October. So we're bringing the topic straight home! (laughs)

PJ: Many people know you more from the pop and entertainment sector. Do you see a contradiction when you speak out on topics such as sustainability or racism?

Oli.P: Of course I think about the world I come from and how people perceive me from the outside. When you're in the pop and entertainment business a lot, it can happen that some people ask themselves: ‘What's he got to do with this?’ But I'm not just an artist, I'm also a person with convictions. You can be entertaining and still think about social issues. One doesn't exclude the other. That's exactly what I want to push further. My new single ‘Bis zum Mond’, for example, takes a clear stance against the right. And if some people think I'm daft because of that - then so be it. I stand by my opinion.
