The role of the grid operators
As part of the liberalisation of the electricity market, the structure of the German electricity grid has fundamentally changed. Previously, the grids were part of large energy conglomerates. These structures were dismantled to enable a more open and fair market. Four supra-regional grid operators for electricity emerged in Germany: Tennet, Amprion, 50Hertz Transmission and TransnetBW. They are not only responsible for the transmission of high voltage, but also play a central role in the integration of renewable energies into the grid.
The four major network operators in Germany are responsible for the integration of renewable electricity into the German power grid. This is a complex and critical task, particularly within the framework of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). They must not only ensure the balancing of green energy, but also conduct the annual calculation of the EEG surcharge. This requires precise technologies and advanced management strategies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of electricity transfer.
The transformation of the energy sector from fossil and nuclear sources to renewable energy sources requires significant investments in infrastructure. Particularly affected are the national grids, which must transport large amounts of wind power from the north to the industrial centres in southern Germany. These necessary investments lead to rising costs, which ultimately have to be borne by consumers. Network operators in Germany are thus faced with the challenge of finding a balance between necessary expansion investments and the financially acceptable burden on consumers.
He who dares to look into the future discovers great challenges for the network operators in Germany: The integration of an increasing number of renewable energy sources, the digitisation of the energy market, as well as the rising demand for electricity due to electromobility and Industry 4.0, require a continuous adjustment and modernisation of the power grids. Therefore, electricity network operators must develop innovative solutions to enhance energy efficiency and ensure grid stability.
Prokon is a key player in the German energy sector. As Germany's largest , we actively advocate for the promotion of renewable energies. By developing and financing wind power and other renewable energy projects, Prokon makes a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany. This not only promotes sustainable energy supply, but also supports national goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A crucial part of our work is the close collaboration with network operators. Ensuring that our wind and PV parks are reliably connected to the grid and that our electricity is efficiently fed in requires constructive cooperation. At the same time, we are involved with our project development team "Storage Technologies" in developing innovative solutions to strengthen grid stability. The lack of storage solutions is the Achilles' heel in expanding renewable generation capacity, and at Prokon, we are actively working to overcome these challenges.
Membership at Prokon is more than just a financial investment; it offers the opportunity to be part of a community actively shaping the future of energy in Germany and beyond. In this way, we connect ecological and economic interests and work together for sustainable development.
The electricity network operators play a crucial role in the German energy landscape, particularly in the context of the ongoing energy transition. As operators of the electricity grids at the highest voltage level, they bear enormous responsibility for the efficient, secure, and sustainable transmission of energy across the country. They ensure that the energy produced – whether from wind, solar, or other sources – reaches where it is needed. Their task is also to maintain the balance between supply and demand to ensure network stability at all times.
