Prokon member Margarete Gaspar has given each of her two granddaughters 200 cooperative shares. For her, it is also an investment in shaping a sustainable energy future.
"The idea of giving Prokon shares to Chantal and Jessica came to me during this year’s general meeting," says Margarete Gaspar. "Instead of simply receiving money, they should become active participants in the energy transition. The idea was very well received by both of them," the senior citizen adds. Gaspar herself has been a Prokon member since 2015. She experienced the turbulent times of the company back then and supported its restart as a cooperative. "Out of conviction," emphasises the Schwerin resident. "The expansion of renewable energies is a matter close to my heart, after all."
"The graduate economist has been actively following the cooperative's projects from the very beginning. She regularly travels to Prokon's general assemblies and exercises her voting rights. After this year's event in Magdeburg, she visits the festival at the Hakenstedt III wind farm together with her granddaughter Jessica Kleiß, right beneath one of the six wind turbines. For both of them, it’s a real highlight. 'Jessica was totally excited by the great atmosphere and the impressive sight of the turbine,' Gaspar recounts.
Shortly afterwards, Jessica and the second granddaughter, Chantal Mach, become new Prokon members, each with 200 shares 'sponsored by Grandma.' Chantal first had to familiarise herself with the North German energy cooperative. 'I had never heard of Prokon before and looked them up online,' says the 25-year-old. She was soon convinced: 'I find the principle of cooperative participation exciting. It’s great that I’m now a part of it!'
Jessica and Chantal work and study in Hamburg. With their shares, they now gain additional financial security. Moreover, they will benefit once a year from an attractive green dividend. Both also see their membership as an opportunity to actively get involved in the cooperative. 'Because of my bachelor thesis, I currently don’t have much time,' says Chantal. 'But afterwards, I want to engage more with Prokon.'"
A great role model when it comes to sustainability and a responsible lifestyle is always Grandma Margarete. The 83-year-old proves that these topics are not a matter of age. Back in 2015, she installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of her house, which supplies her with green electricity. Consistent waste separation is just as important to her as the responsible use of energy. 'This way, everyone can make their own small contribution to a better climate balance.' This has also influenced her granddaughters. 'I always consciously pay attention to using electricity sparingly,' says Chantal. The aspiring business IT specialist is convinced: 'To truly achieve the climate targets, we must consistently advance the expansion of renewable energy.' With her membership at Prokon, she can now contribute her part – just like her grandma: green energy has now become a family affair for us!
Become a member yourself
Become an active part of the Prokon energy cooperative and take out a membership. Experience how your Prokon shares contribute to the construction of new renewable energy facilities, expanding the supply of urgently needed green electricity. Members also benefit from an attractive dividend.
Gift a membership
Looking for a special and sustainable gift? Here's our idea: gift Prokon cooperative shares and actively contribute to the expansion of renewable energy. With their contributions, the recipients help fund the construction of wind and photovoltaic parks – and, of course, they also enjoy the yearly dividend payments.
Transfer balance
Members can transfer their business balances at any time to another person who is already or becomes a Prokon member. This can be arranged through a written contract. It’s up to the member whether the shares are gifted or transferred in exchange for payment of their value.
Corporate membership
Companies can also contribute to the energy cooperative by obtaining a membership, thus actively promoting the energy transition. In addition to the membership application, Prokon requires an extract from the commercial register. Self-employed individuals without a commercial register entry should apply for a membership as a private person.
What happens in the event of inheritance?
If a member passes away, their membership is transferred to their heir(s). If there are multiple heirs, they form what is known as a community of heirs. In this case, the business balance and membership jointly belong to all the heirs.
