In Germany, anyone can become a power generator by owning a photovoltaic system on their roof and producing their own electricity. However, when referring to "power generators in Germany," the focus is primarily on the "Big Four": RWE, EnBW, Vattenfall, and E.ON – large, nationwide companies that dominate the German electricity market. In 2022, they, together with the energy producer LEAG based in the eastern German region of Lausitz, generated a total of 63.5% of all energy in Germany (Source: Statista). The "Big Four" are often intertwined with local power suppliers, particularly municipal utilities and local energy providers, for example, through shares they hold or long-term contracts.
Between power generators and power traders, there are crucial differences. Power generators actively produce energy - from large power plants to small photovoltaic systems on private rooftops. Power providers, on the other hand, are usually traders who deliver the produced energy to end consumers. Power providers buy electricity directly from power generators or through the power exchange and supply it to households and businesses in exchange for money.
Prokon plays a unique role in this regard: as a producer of certified green energy and direct distributor to consumers, we combine the functions of a power generator and power trader. A significant portion of our electricity is sold through so-called direct marketers under the EEG, some through the Leipzig power exchange. Any produced power not covered by EEG support is distributed directly to our customers with the help of our service providers.
