In Germany, there are well over 1,000 different electricity providers, or retailers, with whom households can enter into supply contracts. However, two-thirds of German households still obtain their electricity from municipal utilities and large national producers such as E.ON, RWE, EnBW, or Vattenfall.
The actual choice of potential electricity providers for a household is much smaller. For a larger city, there are approximately 160 different providers that could be considered for supply. Among them are also national providers of green energy, such as Lichtblick, the largest green energy provider, and cooperatively organized companies like Prokon. As Prokon generates energy in its wind parks, the cooperative from Itzehoe acts as both producer and retailer.
