The term "electricity mix" describes the composition of different energy sources used for electricity generation in Germany. It refers to three different scenarios:
Total energy mix at a country level: In this context, the electricity mix indicates the sources from which the energy a country produces in a year originates. Comparing with other countries helps identify trends in energy generation and track progress towards more sustainable energy sources.
Company mix of an electricity provider: In this sense, the electricity mix describes the sources from which an electricity provider sources its electricity. This information is particularly relevant for consumers who value sustainability: The amount of conventional and renewable energies used in electricity generation provides insight into the contribution a provider makes towards a clean environment. For pure green energy providers, the electricity mix shows the sources of renewable resources (hydro, wind, solar, and wind energy) from which the electricity comes. It also indicates the proportion that was supported by the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
Product mix for end consumers: The electricity mix is considered based on the specific electricity tariff chosen by consumers.
By the way, electricity providers are legally required to disclose on the electricity bill where the supplied electricity comes from. Additionally, they must specify the proportion that is supported through the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is designed to steer Germany towards a greener energy future. The aim of the law is to significantly increase the proportion of renewable energies such as wind, solar, and water in Germany's electricity mix. How? By providing financial support to producers of green energy. The result is a steadily greener electricity supply and an important step towards climate protection. In short, the EEG makes renewable energies more competitive and helps Germany achieve its energy goals.
The current figures for the electricity mix in Germany show that more and more green energy is flowing through our power grid. In 2023, 56%
Whilst renewable energies are gaining momentum, wind turbines are spinning at full speed and solar panels are capturing every ray of sunshine, less environmentally friendly energy sources are increasingly taking a back seat. Coal-fired power plants and nuclear reactors, which have been the backbone of our energy supply for many years, we are slowly but surely leaving behind. This transition is not only beneficial for our planet - it is also an important step towards achieving Germany's and Europe's ambitious climate goals.
For their high use of renewable energy, the Scandinavian countries are known. Leading the way is Norway: In 2023, the share of renewable energy used for electricity generation was around 99%
The positive development towards more renewable energy in Germany is a real ray of hope in the fight against climate change. It shows that we are on the right path to making our energy supply more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
And the best part? Each of us can contribute to this! By consciously choosing green energy tariffs and thereby further boosting the demand for renewable energy. Together, we shape the energy future and make our planet a bit greener.
But beware: Green energy is not all the same! Each of our electricity customers sources green energy directly from Prokon's wind turbines. But we go one step further: Throughout the year, our wind turbines generate more energy than all of our customers together consume. This allows us to actively supply the German electricity grid with additional green energy and to continuously make the energy mix greener. Furthermore, as a citizen energy cooperative, we reinvest our surpluses in new renewable energy facilities, actively driving the energy transition forward. This practice is unique in Germany. Actively support the green transition with Prokon - for a cleaner, renewable future. Find out more about becoming a member of Prokon and our green energy tariffs now!
